Introduction

This document describes the work done by the CSN1 in response to the initiative of the INFN management for the construction of a road map that shall outline the main initiative of the Institute from here to the end of the decade.

In order to examine the initiatives that might (and possibly should) develop inside the frame ot the activities of particle physics at accelerator complex a set of working groups has been set up.

This groups (together with the convener) are:

  • Super B-factory (M. Giorgi)

  • International Linear Collider (M. Diemoz)

  • High Intensity Frontier (F. Cervelli)

  • Hadron and Spin Physics (S. DallaTorre)

  • SuperLHC (M. DePalma)

  • K-Physics (M. Morandin)

  • Physics at Dafne2 (non-K) (C. Bini)

The activity and documentation of the work can be found in http://www.infn.it/csn1/esperimenti/wg.html

The conveners have been paired with at least one theoretician (chosen in agreement with the CSN4) that has greatly helped the process.

The progresses have been monitored in a normal meeting of the CSN1 (http://www.infn.it/csn1/riunioni/agenda/14-11-2005/agenda1.html )and a special session has been held in January (http://www.infn.it/csn1/riunioni/agenda/2006/11-01-2006/agenda2.html)

The contribution is organized as follows.

In the next chapter we give a brief description of the items identified as crucial for the future. Then in the Strategy and Priorities chapter we propose a timeline for the chosen projects. It will appear that most of the leading initiative of CSN1 while requiring a substantial amount of R&D in this decade will however find their natural realization beyond 2010.

The implication of the priorities on the budget of the CSN1 will be presented in the subsequent chapter. Some conclusion will follow. Two appendices are foreseen. The documents produced by the Working Groups and also, whenever appropriate, the cards summarizing the main items (science-, manpower-, budget-wise) of the new projects.
